I don’t think I ever had one single moment where I decided to become a photographer. It was more like something I slowly stepped into, without realizing it was becoming a big part of my life.

I was working full time in marketing at Toppling Goliath Brewing Co when a photographer position opened up. They asked if I would take it on. At that point, photography was something I enjoyed casually. I loved taking photos on my phone, editing them, and noticing small details in everyday life. I had taken a photography class in high school, but I still wouldn’t have called myself a “photographer” yet.

Once I stepped into the role, I started realizing how much I loved it. Not just the photos themselves, but everything behind them. The storytelling. The emotion. The way a single image can hold an entire memory. I didn’t want to just rely on what I already knew, so I started learning everything I could. Podcasts became part of my daily life. You’ll usually find me listening while I work, drive, get ready in the morning, or edit galleries late at night. YouTube tutorials, education videos, photography breakdowns, anything I could get my hands on.

Photography stopped being something I was “trying out” and became something I genuinely cared about learning deeply.

And then something interesting started happening. The more I learned, the more I fell in love with the people side of it.

Friends and family would say things like, “You’ve always loved doing this,” and I realized they were right in a way I hadn’t fully connected before. This wasn’t random. It was always there, just growing quietly in the background.

What I care about most now is not just taking beautiful photos, but creating an experience that actually feels good for the people in front of my camera.

I photograph weddings, engagements, couples, and elopements for people who care deeply about how their memories feel, not just how they look. My work is rooted in candid storytelling, earthy tones, and nostalgic emotion with a subtle editorial feel. I am based in Iowa and often work as a destination and Midwest wedding photographer, serving couples in places like Minnesota, Wisconsin, and beyond.

But titles and locations are only part of the story.

What really matters to me is the experience.

Most people who come to me start with the same concern. They tell me they feel awkward in front of the camera. They worry about what to do with their hands. They’re nervous they won’t look natural. They assume they need to know how to pose perfectly before they even show up.

I always tell them the same thing. You don’t need to know how to do any of that. That’s my job.

My approach is built around prompting instead of stiff posing. I don’t spend sessions telling you exactly how to place your hand or tilt your head every few seconds. Instead, I guide you through movement and interaction so you can actually focus on each other instead of the camera.

I might have you walk together and bump into each other a little. I might ask you to whisper something funny. I might tell you to “kiss attack” your partner or act like you’re telling an inside joke no one else can hear. The goal is always the same. Create real reactions, real laughter, and real connection.

Because that is what feels real when you look back years later.

I don’t want you remembering a list of directions you were trying to follow. I want you remembering how you felt in the moment. How you laughed without thinking. How you forgot I was even there.

That is where candid photography lives for me.

I am drawn to movement, emotion, and the quiet in-between moments that often go unnoticed. A parent watching from a distance. A small touch on the shoulder. A breath right before the ceremony begins. The way someone looks at you when they think no one is paying attention.

Those are the images that matter most over time.

My editing style reflects that same philosophy. I lean toward true-to-tone, earthy, nostalgic imagery that feels timeless rather than trendy. I want your photos to age well. I want them to still feel honest ten, twenty, even fifty years from now. Not tied to a passing style, but tied to your actual memory.

Because photography is not just about how something looked. It is about how it lived.

On a wedding day, I show up as both a calm presence and your built-in best friend. I help guide timelines, support the flow of the day, fix little details, and make sure things feel organized without feeling forced. I also know when to step back and let moments happen naturally without interruption.

You don’t need to perform for the camera. You just get to live your day.

I take that responsibility seriously, especially when it comes to how people feel in front of me. My clients are not just “clients” to me. They are people I genuinely care about. I want you to feel comfortable, supported, and seen. I want you to trust that I will guide you in a way that still feels like you.

Over time, I’ve learned that the best photos don’t come from perfect conditions. They come from trust.

Trust between you and your person. And trust between you and me.

When both exist, everything becomes easier.

If you are looking for a wedding photographer who values emotion over perfection, who focuses on real connection instead of rigid posing, and who will treat your story with care, I would love to work with you.

Moriah J Studios is for couples who want their photos to feel like memories, not performances.

For people who want to look back and not just see what happened, but feel it again.

And if that is what you are looking for, you are exactly where you need to be.
