Wedding Photography With A Candid Approach

Start your experience

Years from now, I do not want you looking back at your photos remembering how nervous you felt being told exactly how to smile. I want you to remember the way your fiancé made you laugh so hard you forgot I was even there. I want you to remember the feeling of the day itself.

That is why candid photography means so much to me.

My editing style is true to tone, earthy, nostalgic, and timeless because I want your images to age beautifully. I don’t chase editing trends that may feel outdated years from now. I want your gallery to feel honest. I want your skin tones, your flowers, your venue, your sunset, and your memories to look real.

My clients are never just another booking on my calendar. I want you to feel taken care of from the moment you inquire. Whether that means helping build your wedding timeline, guiding you through locations and lighting, calming nerves before portraits, fixing stray hairs, carrying bouquets, or helping keep the day running smoothly, I’m there for all of it.

I know how overwhelming wedding planning can feel, which is why my goal is not just to deliver beautiful photos. My goal is to create an experience where you can actually relax and enjoy your day.

I bring a mix of calm energy and hype-woman best friend energy into every wedding day and session. I’ll help direct the flow when needed, but I also know when to quietly disappear into the background and document moments exactly as they happen.

If you are dreaming of photographs that feel candid, emotional, editorial, earthy, and deeply personal, you are in the right place.

At the end of the day, I want your photographs to remind you not only of what your wedding looked like, but exactly how it felt to live it.

If you’re searching for a wedding photographer who values emotion over perfection, movement over stiffness, and genuine connection over forced moments, I would absolutely love to tell your story.

"Moriah did a Mommy and Me shoot with my son and I and she did a wonderful job. She had so many great pose ideas and made the photoshoot fun, especially for a 7 year old boy who doesn't like to smile for pictures. Also her editing style is so aesthetic and clean. Would definitely recommend. We will be going back for all future photography needs.
— Miranda

I believe the most meaningful photographs are the ones that make you feel something years later.

Not just the perfectly posed images smiling at the camera, but the in-between moments you didn’t even realize were happening. The way your partner looked at you during dinner. Your grandma holding your hand. Wind blowing through your hair during portraits. The tears, the movement, the laughter, the chaos, the calm. The moments that felt real.

That is what I’m here to capture.

I’m Moriah, the photographer behind Moriah J Studios. I’m a wedding and couples photographer based in Decorah, Iowa, serving couples throughout Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and destinations worldwide. I specialize in candid, earthy, nostalgic imagery with an editorial touch. My approach is centered around creating photographs that feel effortless, emotional, and timeless.

Most of my clients tell me the same thing before their session:

“We’re awkward in front of the camera.”

Perfect. You are exactly the kind of people I love photographing.

My sessions are not about standing perfectly still while I tell you where to place your hands every five seconds. I care much more about movement, emotion, connection, and creating an experience that actually feels fun. Instead of stiff posing, I use prompts that get people laughing, interacting, and forgetting the camera is even there.

I might tell you to walk toward me pretending you’re slightly drunk. I might tell your fiancé to “kiss attack” you. I might have you dance, run, whisper something ridiculous, or simply slow down and be present together.

That’s where the magic happens.

The goal is never to make you look perfect. The goal is to make you feel like yourselves.

Because years from now, I do not want you looking back at your photos remembering how nervous you felt being told exactly how to smile. I want you to remember the way your fiancé made you laugh so hard you forgot I was even there. I want you to remember the feeling of the day itself.

That is why candid photography means so much to me.

Some of my favorite images from a wedding day are the ones nobody notices happening in real time. An elderly couple hugging quietly during cocktail hour. A parent tearing up in the background. A flower girl spinning around on the dance floor. The moments that are easy to miss while the day is moving fast.

Those photographs only become more valuable with time.

That philosophy influences everything about the way I photograph and edit. My editing style is true to tone, earthy, nostalgic, and timeless because I want your images to age beautifully. I don’t chase editing trends that may feel outdated years from now. I want your gallery to feel honest. I want your skin tones, your flowers, your venue, your sunset, and your memories to look real.

When you invest in wedding photography, you are investing in the only thing that increases in emotional value as time passes.

Your photographs become part of your history.

My journey into photography started unexpectedly while working in marketing at Toppling Goliath Brewing Co. A photographer position opened up, and I stepped into the role after years of casually loving photography and editing on my iPhone. Once I started teaching myself photography more seriously through podcasts, YouTube videos, online education, and constant practice, I completely fell in love with it.

What started as curiosity quickly became something much deeper.

I fell in love with storytelling. Human connection. The emotion behind photographs. The ability to freeze a feeling in time.

Now, photography has become one of the greatest joys of my life because not only do I get to document meaningful moments for my clients, but I also get to experience them alongside you.

I genuinely care deeply about the people I photograph.

You deserve a photographer who makes things feel easier.

Someone who can confidently guide when needed, step back when appropriate, and create space for genuine moments to unfold naturally.

That balance is incredibly important to me.

Moriah J Studios serves couples looking for a luxury wedding photography experience rooted in connection, storytelling, and intentional imagery. I photograph weddings, engagements, couples sessions, and elopements throughout Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and destinations beyond.

Whether your wedding day looks like a quiet mountaintop elopement, a candlelit estate celebration, a downtown editorial-inspired wedding weekend, or a windy outdoor ceremony in the rain, I am all in.

Especially the rain, honestly.

Some of the most emotional photographs happen in imperfect weather, imperfect moments, and beautifully unplanned situations. Those are often the moments that feel the most alive.

At the end of the day, I want your photographs to remind you not only of what your wedding looked like, but exactly how it felt to live it.

Life moves quickly.

Your photographs allow you to hold onto it a little longer.

If you’re searching for an Iowa wedding photographer who values emotion over perfection, movement over stiffness, and genuine connection over forced moments, I would absolutely love to tell your story.
